How to get to get there:
By far, the fastest and easiest way to get to Greece is to fly. Greece has many airports where travelers can fly into and choose where their destination may be from there.
Greece offers flights from the mainland to the islands. However, the most popular form of transportation to the islands is by ferry. Most ferries offer routes to several different islands. Although there are other means of transportation. In personal experience, I took a cruise from Athens and traveled to the islands.
How to get around:
The most common ways to get around the mainland is by car, bus, or taxi. The inner-city bus system is Greece is very popular and can take you to many places within the Greek mainland.
The islands, for the most part, have the same means of travel. You can easily travel by car, bus or taxi on the island, as well as by foot. If you are walking around the island it is much easier to see the sites and shop around. Specifically on Santorini, you have to take a means of transportation to travel up to the top of the island. There were three ways you could reach the top of the island:
By foot, by Donkey, and by Cable Car
Travelers can roam about the island and explore the towns of Oia, Imerovigli, Firostefani, and Fira, and enjoy some of the most beautiful views of the islands. If you go the entire distance, you will walk just over about 6 miles. It is very easy to walk around and explore the seaside towns and just as easy to walk through rural hiking spots and beautiful small villages. Tourists can follow self-guided walking tours to hit all of the popular destination spots on the island.
Travelers can ride on donkeys up to the top of Santorini and around the island. The donkey guides you up the steps and on the top to the busiest part of Santorini.
Travelers, such as I did, can take the cable car which provides you a safe transport from the old port to the capital of Santorini, Fira. Some people can also use it just to admire the amazing view of the stunning caldera, the sea and the volcano from a 220 meters altitude.
